10×13” and 18×20” Fine Art Print of original charcoal work “Oracle of Grief” - an original 18×20” handmade charcoal drawing on paper.
About: This piece emerged from a small blue pen sketch I did many years ago. Initially this was meant to be a study for a painting, just a larger fleshed out sketch. I ended up working on it for seven hours straight, the Oracle wanted to be made right then and there in that medium. From the first tiny sketch he had a mournful presence and seemed to me a spirit of grieving, cradling a horned serpent in his arms — an ancient and enduring symbol of the underworld, or transmutation, of water medicine which washes our tears away. The face between his horns representing the loss he carries, blurred memories of people lost. Smoke seeps out of the top of the head, where I always imagined the spirit leaves from. It is his duty to carry them.
